The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the greatest challenges for all businesses to-date, and has immensely affected the F&B landscape. Robots and automation technology has since caught the attention of many and now plays a more vital role in the F&B industry. The utilisation of robots not only enables contactless transactions, but also ensures that the business operations is not paralysed by the absence or lack of manpower, according to Gavin Pathross, CEO and Founder of ROSS Digital.
Prior to founding ROSS Digital, Pathross was the Chief Digital Officer at Yum! where he oversaw the digital transformation of over 8,000 KFC and Pizza Hut outlets in China. This transformation featured robotic waiters and adoption of scan-to-order QR codes on the restaurant tables to increase efficiency. Pathross also spearheaded the revamp of KFC’s mobile app with ‘pre-ordering’ as its key feature to minimise queues clocking in another milestone under his leadership. The application became the most downloaded F&B branded application in 2017 with over 150 million downloads and over 30 million daily active users.
With the continued development in automation solutions for the F&B industry, not only does it ensure continuity of the business but also future-proofing the industry. An example is the trade of a Tao Chew that is fast disappearing, with the art being codified, ROSS Digital making sure that there is continuity in the art of making and enjoying kopi and teh the old fashion way.
Pathross’ advice to aspiring youths is that it is never too early to chase your dreams if you already have an idea about what you want to do. It is important to have a direction and vision of your end goal, this will help in planning how to go about doing so. On the other hand, if you still don’t know what you want to do, it is the best time to try out different things while you are young and adaptable.
The best way to really know how an industry works is to give it a try. Even different companies within an industry can differ greatly in terms of work culture and function. If there is an industry you are interested in but not sure on the designation, try out different roles and job scopes, hopefully you will eventually find something you enjoy working in.
Do not be afraid of trying new things and work hard for what you believe in.
